Effective, Non-invasive Treatment for Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine affecting 2-3% of the population, or an estimated 6 million people in the U.S. More than 80% have a type called idiopathic. Abnormal spinal curvatures can be affected by an unknown trigger which creates asymmetric loading on the spine. Subsequently, this may lead to a vicious cycle of progressive spinal deformity.

The Schroth™ Method

Scoliosis Therapeutic Care is a Physical Therapy Practice Specializing in Conservative Management of Scoliosis and Kyphosis Utilizing the Schroth™ Based Method.

This physical therapy method uses curve-specific exercises to create 3-D forces in the spine.

It incorporates Principles of Auto-Elongation, Isometric Strengthening and Corrective Rotational Breathing to:

  • Prevent or decrease curve progression

  • Increase trunk strength and flexibility
  • Enhance pulmonary function
  • Promote more symmetrical posture and balanced appearance
  • Reduce pain

Treatment Includes:

  • Musculoskeletal evaluation
  • X-ray review and postural assessment
  • Scoliosis education for patients and families
  • Individualized exercise program, working
  • One-on-one with a PT certified in Schroth™

  • Based method

  • Customized home exercise program

Scoliosis Management: An Exercise Based Approach

The Schroth™ method has been successfully used on thousands of patients in Europe since 1920, and in the US since 2000. This physical therapy method is compatible with the current treatment approach in the United States including adolescent bracing. It utilizes techniques that counteract spine curve patterns, and affect muscle imbalances and lung capacity. Patients are taught to maintain and integrate these corrected postures in everyday activities.

Beneficial For:

  • Children aged 10 or older with a curve of 15-55 degree Cobb angle

  • Adolescents and adults, before and after surgery

  • Most adults, regardless of curve size
